[SYU-IRO]

The main component is mercury sulfide HgS, which is naturally obtained from a mineral called cinnabar. It means vermillion in English. Vermilion can also be artificially made from mercury and sulfur, but it was called “銀朱・Ginshu”.

It has been used for earthenware, woodware, and other decorations since the late Jomon period in Japan.

Spain and China are well-known producers of cinnabar, but there are not many places where it can be produced. In Japan, Tokushima, Mie, and Nara were cinnabar producing areas in the past. Currently, it is produced in Oita, Kumamoto, Nara, Tokushima, etc.
