[IKKONZOME]
The name comes from the fact that 0.6 kg of safflower (紅花大一斤/IKKON) is used to dye two rolls (二反) of silk.
In ancient times, safflower was very expensive, so it was expensive to dye it deeper red. So, due to economic policies, the general use of deep red dye was prohibited. “Ikkonzome” is the limit color decided for that purpose.
Colors lighter than this were called “Yurushiro”.
